Vintage Handcrafted Coastal Seashell Encrusted Plaster Obelisk Candleholders, Pair

A spectacular pair of handcrafted vintage seashell-encrusted obelisk-form candleholders, constructed of substantial plaster forms and completely embellished by hand with an extraordinary assortment of natural shells.

The graduated pair features an incredible amount of detail. Rows of elongated spiral shells define the architectural edges of each obelisk, while scallop shells, cowries, spiral shells and an assortment of smaller shells have been arranged into intricate repeating patterns across all four sides. Even the bases and raised candle cups are completely decorated.

Unlike many casually made shell pieces, the workmanship on this pair is particularly impressive. The shell placement is deliberate and highly detailed, with individual patterns changing from side to side. The substantial plaster construction also gives both pieces considerable weight and presence.

Created by a longtime Florida shell collector as part of an extensive personal collection, these are wonderfully individual examples of handmade coastal folk art. No two sides are exactly alike.

Designed as candleholders with openings at the top for taper candles, although they are equally striking displayed simply as sculptural objects.
