Rattan vs. Bamboo: What’s the Real Difference?

A friendly public service announcement from someone who knows — and only slightly judges.

If you’ve ever browsed vintage furniture or decor and thought, “bamboo, rattan, same thing,” right?”—trust me, you’re not alone.

But here’s the truth: they are not the same, and knowing the difference can help you appreciate the craftsmanship, history, and beauty behind each piece even more.

So let’s break it down:

What is Bamboo?

  •  Bamboo is a grass — yes, a grass — that grows in tall, hollow stalks.
  •  It’s incredibly lightweight yet strong, and its signature feature is the distinct horizontal nodes or “rings” you see along the stalk.
  •  Bamboo is naturally tubular and can’t be bent without breaking, which is why bamboo furniture is typically constructed by joining straight pieces together rather than weaving or curving them.
  •  Think: vintage British Colonial furniture, early Chinese and Japanese designs, and Victorian-era bamboo pieces — all usually showcasing those beautiful, natural bamboo joints.

What is Rattan?

  •  Rattan is a vine-like palm that grows in the tropical rainforests of Asia, climbing up trees in long, solid stalks.
  • Unlike bamboo, rattan is solid all the way through — not hollow — and it’s extremely flexible when steamed.
  • This flexibility means artisans can bend, curve, and weave rattan into gorgeous, sculptural designs.
  • Think: curvy 1970s coastal chairs, intricate wickerwork, and stunning pencil reed wrapping — all thanks to rattan’s versatility.

Quick Visual Clues:

  • Bamboo: hollow with visible rings/joints, always straight or carefully joined pieces.

  • Rattan: solid, bendable, often woven or sculpted, no visible joints unless part of the design.

Why Does It Matter?

Understanding the difference isn’t just a “fun fact”—it” helps when it comes to valuing, caring for, and loving these pieces properly.

Each material brings its own strengths, aesthetic, and character to a space.

And trust me, once you know… you’ll never confuse them again (and I’ll sleep a little better at night).

Final Thoughts (From Someone Who Sees It All)

I hear it all the time:

“Oh, I love that bamboo chair!” (me, internally screaming: It’s rattan… but I love your enthusiasm!)

The good news? Whether it’s rattan or bamboo, you’re choosing a material that has stood the test of time — just like the memories and stories it carries with it.

And around here, we’re all about celebrating the real thing — and maybe gently teaching along the way.
